Italy is located on the Italian Peninsula in Southern Europe, and on the two
largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. Italy shares its
northern boundary over the Alps with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.
There are independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City which are
enclaves within the Italian Peninsula, while Campione d'Italia is an Italian
exclave in Switzerland.
Italy has been the home of many European cultures, such as the Etruscans and the
Romans, and later was the birthplace of the movement of the Renaissance, that
began in Tuscany and spread all over Europe. Italy's capital Rome has been the
centre of Western civilization, and is the center of the Catholic Church. Italy is located in Western Europe - see map below:

About Italy
Italy is subdivided into 20 regions. It is further divided into 109 provinces and 8,101 municipalities. The climate in Italy is variable depending on the location. The inland northern areas of Italy have a continental climate typically classified as Humid subtropical, while the coastal areas of Liguria and the peninsula south of Florence generally fit the Mediterranean climate stereotype. The coastal areas of the peninsula can be very different from the interior, particularly during the winter months. The higher altitudes are cold, wet, and on high ground snowy. The coastal regions, where most of the large towns are located, have a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot and generally dry summers. The length and intensity of the summer dry season increases further southwards.
