The New Face of Futons

By: Dolly Willms

For people just moving out on their own or heading off to college, the futon used to be the old standard. Posing as a poorly made and ugly couch by day and an uncomfortable joke of a bed at night, the futon did not necessarily build its reputation upon quality. But, for people without the means to go out and lay down a large chunk of money on a new bed, a futon was an affordable but uncomfortable solution to the bedding problem for millions of Americans.

However, things have changed. Now, the futon has an entirely new look. It comes with some innovative design features and product improvements that add to the décor of the house. Now homeowners include futons in the home rather than discard them to the basement or a seedy guest room in the back of the house.

The basic description of the futon has not changed. It still remains a sofa bed, even though, practically, it may not be used for both purposes. It is a decorative yet functional couch to sit on during the day and a comfortable and attractive bed by night.

The comeback of the futon has been fueled in part by improved back support. Many agree that the new futons offer superior back support that rivals even the most expensive conventional mattresses. This has helped lend credibility to the futon as something more than just a mere temporary solution to the bed situation.

One of the complaints made about the old futons was that their mattresses went flat after being used. This was because many of the old futon mattresses were made from a single layer of cotton that easily became condensed and offered little support. But now, futon mattresses have multiple layers including at least one made from solid foam which provides additional support and "bounce back". This subtle but very appreciated improvement has definitely contributed to the new image of futons today.

Besides the improved quality of the mattress, the new futons are made out of sturdy frames. This has made the conversion from bed to couch and back again much simpler. The best futons are made out of solid oak frames and are more appealing to people with traditional décor. The lower end models come with steel frames that are quite well made and almost as attractive as oak frames.

Moreover, the new futons are more versatile. You can change the look of your futon by simply changing the cover. So, instead of worrying about the futon while changing the décor in a room all you have to do is cover it with a fabric that matches the new design scheme. It is much cheaper than the upholstery or replacing the futon. It also makes the futon more versatile so it can be used in more locations.

Indeed, the futon has come back with a bang! The design improvements have made the new futon more adaptable to the interior designs of modern homes. The superior quality of mattresses and frames has changed their earlier image of being cheap, inexpensive, beds. The new futons offer various decorating possibilities besides restful sleep.
