Lessons Learned From Many Moves

By: Lucy Baldwin

How many times have I moved? At least 17. My dad was with the US Military, so we moved a lot. And as an adult, I just kept the moving habit, I guess.

So what have I learned from all those moves?

1. Life is full of changes - get used to it.

Even if you never move, things change in life. Nothing stays the same. At least when you move a lot, you start to embrace change, even look forward to it. At the very least, you will get used to change.

2. Every place has its good points.

Start searching for the good things about your new situation. Don't just look back in longing to the old place where you were. Look forward to finding good things, and you will.

Try that, and see how quickly you will feel better.

3. Friends can be found anywhere, if you look for them.

Throughout life's changes, you need to make new friends. Even if you stay in one place, changes such as getting married, having children, or taking a new job, often mean you lose track of some friends and you make new friends. It's the same when you move to a new area. You will make new friends - just give it time.

4. Keep in touch with old friends.

You can send them emails, call them, send cards, and visit. Whatever you do, you should not let these old friendships slide.

5. Keep a positive attitude.

If you get discouraged and look at the bad side of everything, that's what you will find. On the other hand, if you keep a positive outlook, you will find good things
in your life.
