Fall for Patio Furniture

By: Kathy Moran

Labor Day has always been considered the unofficial end of summer, the season in which we spend a great deal of our time relaxing in our patio chairs. In many cases, our periods of rest were taken after a hard day’s work tending to our lawns and gardens. Even though, given the choice, most of us would rather relax and enjoy the view than be out planting, mowing, and pruning, we have to admit that it gives us quite a rewarding feeling when we are, at least, partly responsible for the beauty that we relish. Luckily, during the fall, which is one of the most beautiful seasons, there’s still plenty of time to sit on your porch, deck, or patio, and admire the spectacular scenery. However, as we all know, yard work is never done – it just changes. Over the course of a year, mowing turns to raking, and then shoveling; and, although it’s time to harvest many of the things that we planted in the spring, there is still a lot of planting to do in the fall. So, just think of how much that rewarding feeling will increase, when, besides maintaining your lawn and garden now, you prepare them to look their best next year. The end of summer is the ideal time for planting many varieties of perennials, shrubs, and trees. This will give them time to put their roots down firmly over the winter months, so that they can produce healthy foliage in the spring. Once the soil temperature drops to below 60 degrees, you can also begin planting the bulbs of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, about three times as deep as their diameters. Although some people like their tulips in neat rows, you can create a spectacular group display, by planting up to twenty bulbs in a hole that is one foot in diameter, making sure that they are not touching. You can also see that your lawn gets a healthy start next spring, by keeping up with your raking. As fall is usually quite rainy, built-up leaves and grass clippings will turn into thick, wet clumps that are quite inviting to lawn pests. Another way to ensure a good season next summer is to prepare yourself with the best outdoor furniture now.
