While we scrub our living rooms, kitchen and bathroom squeaky clean, we would often neglect the area outside our house which is the patio. No wonder patios are more of a place for the birds and their dropping rather than being treated as an equal to our living room and kitchen. Not everyone loves spending time scrubbing and sweeping and for most of us, the patio just adds to the long list of cleaning we initially have. However, despite the inconveniences of having a patio in terms of maintenance, a patio could give a sense of novelty to a home; making it looks cozier and more homely. Besides, a patio is the perfect place for one to organize a barbecue party, high tea, or hold a much needed and long-overdue tête-à-tête with bosom friends. It is also the best place to go if one wishes to unwind and enjoy the late evening sun after a long, harsh day at work. Hence, despite the fact that the patio may not be the most important area in one’s house, it deserves to be decorated and well maintained as the other rooms, as it too, add to the aesthetical value of a place one calls ‘home’. How does one decorate his/her patio? The fundamental principle in decorating the patio is to remember that because it is an outdoor place, it is subjected to suffer the temperamental mood swings of Mother Nature. Sometimes, it might be flooded wet by torrents of rain, or be filled with sand, pebbles, and stones after a strong wind. Worse, sometimes, one’s patio is usually the favorite place for animals to ‘hang out’, and this would result in the place being clad with animal droppings, feathers and furs. Keeping all these circumstances in mind, one must decorate his or her patio as sensibly as possible; which means the owner has to be extra careful and practical in the selection of furniture that will go out onto the patio. Choosing the Right Furniture To choose the right furniture, you would need to identify the size of your patio. Usually, there are three common sizes. A large patio, medium size patio and a small sized one. A large patio would be able to accommodate up to 30 people at one time while a medium sized one is ample enough for 8-10 people. If you have a small size patio, you would probably not be able to have more than 3 people at a time. Since most houses today have the medium size patio, it is wise to adopt the minimalist approach in decorating. A minimalist approach is a way of decorating small spaces with few furniture and decorative items. This is to make the space appear bigger than it actually is. The best way to make this idea work is to opt for simple furniture that is also elegant in style. You can even add a hammock and colorful market umbrella that are a sure equipment to help you relax and shelter you from rain or shine whenever you use the patio. Choosing the right cushions Today, a patio cushion is about the most sought after patio décor in the market. With demands booming for them, manufacturers have come up with a variety of cushions. Some of the popular ones are the ‘Cartridge Style’ cushion, the ‘Universal Style’ and the ‘Boxed & Welted Style’. However, the most popular would have to be the classic ‘Wicker Style’ cushion which is made from rattan. This particular style has the ability to create the countryside aura to your patio which could be the reason why they are ever so popular. Some neglects the type of fabric to cover the cushion. This should not be as the fabric is a very important element in determining that life span of your cushion and it’s durability in staying in the outdoor environment. Opt for water-resistant fabrics to make your cleaning job easier and sun-resistant fabric so the color will not fade due to direct exposure to the sun light. You are never on the loosing end when you invest in high quality fabrics for your cushion. Your patio should be a warm and cozy place with practical furniture and decors. A coffee table with chairs and patio umbrellas are the simple items that you might just need to create the desired atmosphere. Stay away from bulky furniture and stuffing every bits of décor at you patio or you might just end up with one big mess.
