Buying Property in Spain

By: Chris Samuelsson from oppSpain

For those in search of a relaxing home to retire in or for vacation getaways, Spain yet remains one of the most attractive locations. During the last ten years the country has undergone a huge real estate boom and massive development, especially along its coasts, but its appeal for foreigners (especially other Europeans) hasn’t decreased or fallen out of preference.

This is because Spain truly has so much to offer: good weather, beautiful beaches, a warm and inviting culture, interesting history, a strong economy, reliable infrastructure, and thousands more positive factors that thousands of people have found throughout the years to be enough to cut their roots and come to live in Spain.

Now that the decade-long boom is winding down, prices have begun slowing down (at one point they were raising by 30% yearly), but a crash is by no means expected by analysts in and outside of the country. The current moderate rise in prices is predicted to level out throughout 2007 to more maintainable rates.

Experts predict property in Spain to remain hot because the economy will stay strong and Spain’s natural treasures (climate, geography, culture) show no signs of disappearing.

Spain has been revamping its legislature to make it easier on foreigners who want to spend time in Spain (be it for work, retirement, or simply vacation). It’s always recommended, though, to make an effort to learn Spanish in order to maneuver smoothly through daily life.

A recent poll ranked Spain as the preferred location for non-Spanish Europeans seeking to live and work in another country; its growing immigrant population (most of which is from non-European countries such as Latin America and Africa) has been and continues to act as a positive economic motivator.

These factors and more make Spanish property some of the most coveted land on earth.

Here are some interesting places in the ever-popular Costa del Sol:

• Benalmádena: A small town of 30,000 that expands to over 120,000 during the summer, when all the vacationers and tourists come. It consists of a charming little village hidden in the mountains and more extensive developments along the coast (with a bit of a division between the two), promising the best of both worlds: silence and seclusion, and convenience and fun.

• Marbella: Attracts the rich and famous like flies to… but also a place that’s beginning to appeal to middle-class second-home seekers. Much to see and do.

• Nerja: Originally a tiny fishing village, this still-small town hasn’t lost much of its charm, despite its unmistakable status as a tourist stronghold. Pristine beaches, mysterious caves along the coast, and comfy white-washed villas hold a strong appeal to the romantically inclined.
