The feast-or-famine life of a real estate agent can mean difficulty in organizing one's life to meet the demands of an ever-changing real estate landscape. However, organization is key to a successful career and a rewarding work-life balance. Here are some tips to make yourself more productive, so that you can do more with less time and enjoy your non-work hours. Planning your time with certain goals in mind can make them happen if you cut them down into small, attainable steps. If you focus on, say, selling ten houses and think of nothing but the big picture, you will lose focus on the details that will make the sale of those ten houses a reality. Make a Long-Term Plan (But Don't Live Your Daily Life With It In Mind) "I want to sell 10 houses in 6 months." Well, you're not likely to have 10 people who are going to go to one showing of a house, fall in love with it, and buy it right on the spot. You are likely to have a lot of red herrings on the lines you throw out to snag potential buyers of those 10 houses. You are going to go through a lot of work getting paperwork ready and meeting with the buyers, negotiating offers, etc. etc. etc. If you're focussing on nothing but "I want to sell 10 houses in 6 months", you can get discouraged. Make Short-Term Plans If you want to sell 10 houses, you start with 1. What can you do to help 1 house sell? Imagine that this is the only house you can sell - what would you do to make it appealing to people? Who would you advise that the seller target? What would you emphasize? When you are working with a property, act as if it is the only property in the world for you and act accordingly. Take One Day at a Time Instead of thinking, "Gee, I hope that I can sell a house today!", focus on the question, "What small thing can I do today to help this house catch the attention of interested buyers?" Make small goals for yourself each day that eventually add up to a bigger accomplishment. Guard Your Time Do you waste time at the computer when you've allotted working time to those valuable minutes? Stop and think why you are avoiding doing something. Is it because it is not a favorite task of yours and you just... don't... want... to... do... it...? The problem with this is that you have wasted time and your task still isn't done. So, there it hangs, over your head until you resentfully do a less-than-stellar job of it. Consider cutting it down to manageable bits. If you hate paperwork, tell yourself to do one page. Just one. If you find that you're on a roll, great! Otherwise, it's okay if you stop at one. You'll probably focus better, knowing that one page is all you have to do. When Work's Done, It's Done Don't take your work home with you if you can possibly avoid it. Your non-work hours are precious, both to you and those you spend time with. Maximize the quality of that time, leaving work where it belongs - something for another time. Your work life and home life will benefit. Expect Slip-Ups and Set-Backs The ideas in this article aren't going to come to fruition overnight or even in the first few months. Expect times when you forget to do things or can't get to them or have to take some work home or meet a client after hours. This is a part of life; the important thing is that you keep on going with your plan. Don't see the obstacles; see the goal.
