It’s easy to see why arbors and trellises have been popular since ancient times. When gloriously draped with gorgeous climbing flowers and vines, they add an air of enchantment to any setting. They can be used as striking centerpieces, colorful focal points, and decorative camouflage for less-than-perfect landscape features. Arbors, trellises, pergolas, and lattice enclosures can also be strategically placed to create separate outdoor “rooms,” or cozy backyard hideaways; and, when strung with lights, they are absolutely breath-taking. Indeed, there are countless delightful uses for these lovely garden structures; but, with Halloween quickly approaching, it’s time to imagine all of the different ways in which they can add to the eeriness of the holiday. To begin with, you can achieve a truly bewitching effect, simply by decorating them with orange lights. On an arbor over the entryway to your front walk, this is a fun and spooky way to greet trick-or-treaters and party guests. Strings of light-up ghosts, skulls, or jack-o-lanterns are also perfect for the occasion, and can be found in most retail or Halloween specialty stores. When shopping at the latter, however, remember that these places are often temporary, opening up some time in early September, and closing in the first week of November. If that’s the case, be sure to ask about warranties and return policies, and get the address of a parent company or main office, so you won’t be stuck if the decorations or costumes that you purchase turn out to be defective. To make things a bit scarier, hang a skeleton, ghost, witch, or “dead body” from the arbor. You can even rig it with a wire or rope so that you can raise it up, out of sight, and let it drop suddenly, in front of some sweet, unsuspecting, innocent little child coming to get some candy (what a hoot!). Other items that are suitable for hanging are fake spiders and spider webs, which are available in abundance this time of year. A few fake bats dangling from your arbor will also help to give ‘em some goose bumps. The fact that, in many parts of the country, the flowers and vines will be, appropriately, dead by the end of October, will add to the creepiness of it all. If you’re having a backyard Halloween party, you can also use trellises to conceal fog machines, or boom boxes or speakers that are supplying spine-chilling sound or light effects.
